About the ST&SV Lab
Founded in 2023 by Harold F. Linder Professor Alondra Nelson, the Science, Technology, and Social Values (ST&SV) Lab explores emerging scientific and technological phenomena (including artificial intelligence, genomics, public health, and space) and their intersections with the frustration and fulfillment of civil, political, and social rights (Du Bois 1910–1934; UDHR 1948; Marshall 1949; Nelson 2011; Fox 2012). The ST&SV Lab develops multidisciplinary research projects and initiatives that examine and assess scientific and technological developments and practices and their implications for matters of justice and democracy. Its work addresses fundamental questions about how science and emerging technologies shape, enable, or constrain civic participation and social citizenship (Marshall 1949) in contemporary society.
The ST&SV Lab employs interdisciplinary social science methodologies, including ethnographic and historical research and policy analysis. Drawing on traditions in science and technology studies, sociology, and related fields, its work analyzes the social dimensions and implications of scientific research and technological development.
The ST&SV Lab bridges academic research with policy engagement and public scholarship. It focuses on building the research insights and policy innovation to support the democratic practice and governance of scientific research and technological development in complex, globally-connected societies.
The ST&SV Lab serves as both a research hub and a platform for broader engagement with questions in science and technology research and policy. Its approach centers on four areas of activity:
- Research
The ST&SV Lab develops multidisciplinary social science projects that examine science and emerging technologies, with particular attention to justice, democracy, and citizenship.
- Policy Engagement
The ST&SV Lab contributes to policy research, analysis and development.
- Public Scholarship
The ST&SV Lab translates research insights into broader discussion through public writing and commentary.
- Convening
Working in an anticipatory mode, the ST&SV lab gathers extraordinary thinkers and fosters collaborations, hosting seminars, workshops, and conferences that bring together scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to address the social dimensions of science and technology and tackle urgent issues in science and technology governance.
